Moqueca Recipe Ideas

Want more ideas for your Moqueca Spice Kit?

Never heard of Moqueca? You’re not alone. But trust me,it’s one of those dishes that once you try it, you’ll wonder how it’s not already a classic here. Think gently simmered fish or veg in a rich, aromatic broth with coconut, lime, and loads of colour. It’s simple to make, full of soul, and tastes like it belongs somewhere sunny and laid-back. It might not be on every UK dinner table (yet), but it absolutely deserves a spot.

Here are some ideas for you to try. All work brilliantly with your Foodiie Moqueca spice blend.

  • Baiana

The instructions in the box are for this classic variation.
  • Capixaba

Skip the coconut milk for a lighter version.
  • Camarão

Replace fish with prawns, and follow instructions in the pack.
  • Frango

Replace fish with boneless chicken thighs, and follow instructions in the pack. Note: chicken thighs work well as they take on flavours and remain tender (unlike chicken breast).
  • Tofu

Use firm tofu. Follow instructions in the pack.
  • Banana de Terra  (VEGAN)

Use 2 ripe but firm plantains. Or sweet potatoes / cauliflower / squash. Throw in an extra chopped yellow pepper. Avoid adding too many different vegetables together in one dish.
  • Other Vegan options:

Sweet potatoes / cauliflower / squash. Avoid adding too many different vegetables together in one dish. Don't forget to allow for different cooking times.

Which fish works with this dish?

Most white fish will work in Moqueca. You can try monkfish, coley, sea bass, or pollock. Cod & haddock well too, but may fall apart more readily.

Can I swap the fish for prawns?

Absolutely. Prawns are a great option. Just allow for a quicker cooking time. Don't over-cook them.
